TOMB OF TOMORROW (2018)

Tomb of Tomorrow is a late-2018 design competition hosted by website Architize.com. The prompt was intentionally very open ended - create a memorial for any deceased, real person or group of persons. I immediately settled upon needing to create one for Mr. Fred Rogers as a response to the growing tension and fear common today. My hope is that by remembering and emphasizing the work of a man who preached love and acceptance, we can begin to bring a sense of peace back to our neighborhoods.

Geometrically, the memorial consists of two equal overlapping rectangles which create a procession of three spaces flowing in sequence. First, a tall entry hall is bright and inviting to all who pass by. It contains a statue of Mr. Rogers, along with color and text to capture interest. There is an intrusion in this space overhead, representing the intersecting geometries but more importantly creating an entry foyer to the second space in sequence - the play/rest room. This room is lower in height, with few windows set to the ends. This creates a dimmer space which encourages a sense of peace and respect. It contains seating for rest and contemplation, and dampens noise with a wall of red curtains on one end. But this cave is dim to contrast with space 3 - the learning area. As tall again as the entry with high clerestory windows lighting it up, this area will beckon and invite visitors to learn about Mr. Rogers’ life and message.
